Birds in FL over the Winter – finally using my Christmas present from G!

We were in FL for a while before we had any luck with my new Birdbuddy smart bird feeder. It may take a couple of weeks before birds find your feeder so us moving every two weeks didn’t help. Finally, at Clerbrook Golf Resort & RV in Clermont we had some success with small birds and the LARGE Sandhill Cranes came around…thinking the food was also for them! Did you know Sandhill Cranes are protected by the state of Florida? I did not. Reading our pamphlet from the office, you are prohibited from feeding ANY wildlife since they are protected by the State. (Being me, I did look this up on the state website and it is true.) Shhhh…plus they are really large birds and when with their “colts”, their babies, they are very protective and will stretch their HUGE wingspan out to intimidate you! And just to make it clear, all this info I’m giving you is purely conjecture – I have no firsthand knowledge of anything illegal.

We did have an interloper at Thousand Trails Orlando and did our best to discourage him! This was before we bought a squirrel cone.

We could see how tall the babies (colts) grew over the two weeks we were there.
This was one of the first photos I took.
The dad could almost reach the feeder! The adults mate for life – so cool. Notice the new squirrel deterrent!
How cute are those babies!!!
He jumped the fence and was coming toward me.
I stepped back in the garage! Took that picture form inside. 🙂
Look how taller the babies are here!
